Gottman Method Couples Therapy (GMCT) is an evidenced based approach to helping couples repair, rebuild and rejuvenate their relationships. It has been developed by Drs John and Julie Gottman from the Gottman Institute in Seattle, USA. It is based on over 40 years of research that looked at understanding what makes relationships work and what makes them fail.
This approach to couples therapy focusses on helping couples first understand what is happening in their relationship, how it has developed from the moment they met to the current day, what's working and what's not and how to develop skills and strategies to repair what's not working, all based on scientific principles.
The first session of GMCT involves an interview with both partners to help the therapist understand the current problems in your relationship and how your relationship has developed over time.
You will both then be asked to complete and extensive psychometric online questionnaire to assist your therapist in better understanding the processes in your relationship that may not be very functional and may be causing distress in your relationship.
Each partner will be asked to attend one individual assessment session with your therapist so that we can gain a good understanding of you and how you see the world and your relationship.
This is the assessment phase of your couples therapy and is vital for your therapist to be able to accurately formulate and plan appropriate treatments for your unique issues.
You and your partner will from then on attend sessions together. During the first treatment session your therapist will walk you through the model of sound relationships and assist you in understanding how your relationship is functioning and you will collaboratively develop a set of goals to assist you to create the relationship you want.
Most couples require somewhere between 10 and 25 sessions of couples therapy to ensure they have the skills to successfully build, manage and maintain their ideal relationship. The therapeutic process will focus on assisting you to learn skills to better manage conflict in your relationship, to build a closer, more intimate relationship characterised by positivity and a strong emotional connection, to create a shared meaning system that will guide you over the years to ensure a stable, satisfying, long lasting relationship.
